welcome to a scrap life a podcast solely focus on the hustlers Grinders operators and business owners who live and breathe the scrap metal industry every day we are the original recyclers no suits required just guts and hard work here is your host Brett eart all right I’m sitting here with Stephan and Todd from D disposition services and uh we had a technical difficulty but we’re back so for recording purposes St let’s talk about da and kind of what you guys do and then we’ll start from there kind of work backwards sure all right so uh defense Logistics agency dis Services a is a component of the Department of Defense and we take all the excess and surplus properties from the military services and then we sell them either through scrap contracts or usable contracts um we have them we’re Global so we’ve got locations everywhere in the US and then Japan Korea Europe and Africa and then we take those proceeds and we offset the service level bill which is what they we charge uh the services for disposing of the property and we’re we also help to support our main focus support

the warf fighter okay for that so is this a so this is an extension of the government it’s not a private entity correct correct it is actually the government that okay correct and so what are your guys’ roles with the D so I’m the scrap supervisor to is one of our sales Contracting officers he actually writes the contracts okay so you’re the grains of the operation he say pretty much pretty much absolutely absolutely so how I mean the show I mean you guys had a successful show I mean do you guys do you guys do ier like the National Convention as well or yes we went is last year and I believe the year before we’re just kind of getting our feet wood in it yeah doing like the conventions and kind of trying to get the word out of what you guys are doing yep so and we kind of you had briefly touched on it but you know the difference between the iy show and this show is this is probably more small medium siiz operator Centric right business size right and you know is kind of you get the full D

it but it is a lot of your bigger corporations and you know Traders and all over the the world and this is probably more geographically like concentrated I would say you know not a lot of people from the West here you know it’s mostly people within driving distance or a short flight um so you guys are offering these contracts like throughout the country correct okay correct and are they concentrate I mean what concentrated in a certain area I do you have more I mean is just by population by basee by by what what is the we got about 200 contracts active right now okay um they’re more centered around the bases so the East Coast we have more bases more military service more people so most of our contracts are on the east coast East uh North and South okay um but we go all around the world so me a guy from Boy Idaho I mean is there anything out like towards like in the boisey area or is there any like how does that there’s stuff in there’s stuff in the Midwest Columbus Riley I mean go it’s all over the place

what there’s a military n yeah is there any areas you’re having trouble gaining more interest so that we could maybe Target this at you know maybe people that have say a recycling facility in you know certain area of Michigan or we get interest everywhere okay it’s just you know whether it’s one two 3 four five bids or a couple dozen or whatever it just it just depends on material and and the amount really I think the the main problem that we see Brett is people just don’t know about us or they think it’s complicated but cuz they’ll get used to like a service type of contract on the acquisition side where you got to do rfps 30 40 50 pages yeah our process is it’s a one page bid process on it okay and so that’s part of Us coming here is to say hey we’re here we’ve got a lot of contracts that are out there for you we do to on S sams.gov and if you type in delay disposition services and one of the sites like Red River or Min not or places like that that’ll bring up all the

sales and all the opportunities that we have so it’s really about getting our names out in front of people to say we have opportunities for it so yeah your goal is just to drive more biders right I mean is this like a small business you want more people that want to buy your product so then you got more people that you know willing to pay XYZ which then drives revenue for you guys that’s the that’s the the game plan Y in in essence right to to kind of put the business is we’re almost like the wholesaler right because you know for example our mixed Metals is probably an average has been in the past like 3 to 5 cents a pound okay right but we also know when you guys go through the process you’re going to be making more money on those pieces right and we’ve got aluminum and highgrade Alloys and different things we’ve got Rolling Stock and vehicles so we’re not like the the retail end it’s the wholesale here it is you guys take care of it in your pieces so that’s why there’s a lot of opportunity because the

costs are relatively low per pound and the volume is there right like for people to kind of be pay attention to and I and I we like we have a facility in Mountain Home Idaho off the air force base and um and so we’ve we’ve we’ve contracted with them different things throughout like my career like I I have a video of one of our older shears cutting up there was a I don’t know remember what um type type of a jet that was wrecked out there I don’t probably dozen years ago or something like that and I have a video of us like shearing it up into chunks right um I think it was a fatality so they kind of had to there’s certain things they had to do to get it like through the system and whatever else but uh it most of it was still intact and so it was it was definitely an interesting project to to say the least but I would assume that it’s not just stuff like that for you guys it’s like everything from say like an ammo cans type of Deal or like what’s like the

what do you see the most of Vehicles I’d say Vehicles yeah vehicles I mean you’re right it’s anywhere from ammo cans we’re doing battleships yeah and aircraft carries those done bronville Texas they’re getting cut up down there so that’s cool yeah so what does a what does a battleship go for like well there’s different costs associated with this right cuz we do sales so you’re going to give me money you’re going to pay me take that and cut it up so but they got to tow it around there’s money involved for them for towing get through the canals depending what Coast you’re on um we usually I think our best one we’ve gotten is half million-ish so I’ve seen him go like I’ve seen I was reading some like mssn news article or something at one point it was like sold for a dollar or something it’s but but but it’s only because of all the logistics and the freight and the movements and the permits and all the there’s a lot of up cost for you guys to to make that deal work right and then obviously if it’s in a certain

position or if it’s ready to it’s easier to process or you know then it’s that’s what drives the value as well yeah and the good thing about our sales are all public so if you want to know what that went for go on our website look for that sale and see exactly what it went for so what’s the coolest thing you guys like have seen go through there like what’s something stood out for you that’s kind of made it interesting I mean everything you get you get all kinds of aircraft I we almost almost got the space shuttle but NASA took that down there C okay but we almost got part of that so that’s cool that that would have been really neat um there’s some there’s all kind just anything military buys will come through our side anything cool that rings a bell on your end Stephan well we’ve seen stuff like where they have those those training trucks where they flip them upside down right for the training which is kind of cool um anything and everything under the sun you can imagine we’ve kind of seen so it’s just different days

you know you can’t you just like well I’ve never seen that before right yeah um so we’ve seen a lot right so the Expo has been good for you you guys been drawing some attention driving some uh traffic through the booth getting I think we got some good solid leads some people are very interested and some seem really excited about it yeah yeah it’s more just like you know marketing doing this is just getting your name out there and getting people aware that you exist right and Def it’s like anything I mean that’s that’s why we do this is just to get people to know you exist and that there’s opportunity for you so if people want to get a they want to reach out like what’s the best way to check out what you guys got cooking uh I think you jump on sam.gov like Stephan was saying sam.gov yep sam.gov and look for our sales out there um or they get on a DA website and look for the sales page okay and they’ll have all our emails on that awesome awesome and will they get a hold of

you guys directly they want to get hold you or just come see at the show if you guys are at the show come by see absolutely call me 269 9615 993 there it is you guys going to be at iy in uh in Vegas here next April we will have a presence there I don’t know if I’ll be there or he’ll be there but there’ll be somebody there somebody will be there from our sales office all right so if you decide you want to see him in person come see it come see them at isra in 2024 definitely thank you guys for taking the time thanks really appreciate thanks BR absolutely take care
