A Scrap Life: Episode 96 | Sahd Metal Recycling | Alex Vazquez and Todd Kauffman

On this episode of A Scrap Life, Brett is joined once again by Alex and Todd from Sahd Metal Recycling, or as they're more widely known, the hosts of Dumpster Talk. The guys talk about how their own podcast has significantly increased their exposure in the industry, and about how important it is to show people outside of the metals industry how much positive change is taking place on a daily basis. welcome to a scrap life a podcast solely focused on the hustlers Grinders operators and business owners who live and breathe the scrap metal industry every day here is your host Brett eard all right so it’s not quite the dumpster talk that you guys are used to but man I’m super stoked I get to sit here Todd and Alex I mean these guys are pretty famous you know I mean in all reality I mean a lot of people know you guys through dumpster talk I mean you guys run to people when you guys are out cruising around do they do they say hey what’s up man I was about to say we’re just walk through like the casino or whatever people stop us or like you’re the dumpster guys dumpster guys it’s pretty cool it makes us is isn’t that awesome though like is it a good feel makes us feel like like look like we’re a bigger company than we are kind of and just like really gets our name out there so it’s and that’s the cool thing about what you guys are doing like you can tell when you guys do the

you guys are like in it like you know you’re in it to win it you guys are in it cuz you’re passionate about the business you’re passionate about like what you guys are building over there so it’s like fun to watch the the evolution of of your guys’ story man I appreciate that too man it’s fun to go to this stuff because like Columbia is so small and we never have we’re doing the dumpster talk in front of like a brick wall so to come here and like see like different people actually do watch it’s pretty that’s my favorite part I love it and and you guys look sharp too like man if I if I look if I look that good in a suit I’d probably wear one one of these days but man you guys look good so you guys got uh you guys got a a podcast here in a little bit right yes sir we some guys from SA Recycling okay talk about kind of they both Started From The Bottom Of business kind like we both started torching in the yard and now they do have a lot bigger

responsibility so talking about that taking opportunities career advancement in the scrap industry yeah so second day of the show have you I mean what’s kind of the coolest thing that you’ve seen here or like give me like a couple cool things you’ve seen that while you’ve been walking around um we looking at the shredder um and like the downstream systems uhhuh it’s pretty cool to see like I don’t know technology for sure we never seen nothing like which shreders which one which one you looking at um which one is which Shredder you going to convince Dan to put in I don’t know we’ve been looking at we’ve been looking at a couple different ones but that’s out of my room it’s cool just seeing like how different things you can do to upgrade material find different opportunities that’s what we’re trying to grow yeah and this is part of that too like doing all the social media and stuff we do yeah well the thing is man like the way you grow is you come to these shows and you see like what equ equipments out there you know what what’s what’s possible right

I mean the old saying that Rome wasn’t built in the day is like is the ultimate truth cuz it’s years of just grinding it’s years of like coming here and seeing like what equipment could we actually have in our facility someday that could make us more efficient or help us build you know what software could make the most sense for our business and I mean that’s what the show’s expensive but it can provide a lot of value if as much as you want right as much as you’re willing to put into it you can get back out of it it’s also cool just seeing everyone like Todd was saying every time we come we recognize more people we kind of have a deeper connection with people so just makes it better it’s really fun it’s like you’re you’re in the fraternity right like I I wasn’t in a fraternity in college so I don’t you know really know that life but I played football and we had a fraternity of guys that you know know years you know guys that were older than us that played years before us and that was kind of

our fraternity but I talk to guys that are in fraternities and it’s a very similar atmosphere in the fact that it’s like guys that you know that maybe they’re retired or they’re you know they’re you know they theyve changed companies or whatever but they’re still in this fraternity of scrap slash recycle materials yeah you know and and and you guys have kind of stamped your place in it by being willing to put yourselves out there and do stuff like dumpster talks and show up man you guys show up and contribute and be a part of it thank you sure I think it’s cool like I think we met you two years ago here in Vegas and it’s cool to see like how far everything’s come of like the social media aspect of it you C people do that now that’s 2 years right so so if it’s 2 years like imagine what you can get done in 10 yeah like you start to really wrap your mind around it you know and imagine how much opportunity you can create in tent Yeah by just staying consistent and and grinding sure I think that’s why

it’s so fun to Market it too because the scrap industry or recycled materials industry is like such a great industry to work in and a lot of people don’t know that like I’ve never heard about the scrap industry and high school or anything like that so kind of been able like being able to put it out there and like we’ll have friends message us and be like like I thought you guys were just working at a scrapyard what are you doing that’s cool stuff for I’m like it’s not just like a junkyard like there’s a lot of opportunity it’s just if you take it or not it is I mean it’s a little dirty it’s a little gritty but it’s also like you get to do a lot of stuff if you willing to you know put the put the time in and put the effort in and I that’s what I love about you guys is I you guys are younger than me obviously um you’re a lot closer to high school to into that generation of kids that are going to have to make a hard decision here soon right are you

going to go the college route and or you going to go the work route to each its own I don’t I don’t I mean I there’s I think both makes sense for the right individual the work route there’s a lot of opportunity in our industry if we can showcase it and show people like what we’re really about like I think if you could bring kids that were try of on the fence so I go to work do I go to college and you can bring them here and be like this is scrap they’d be like oh like which I think is what’s cool that that uh you know the owners of sad have done for you guys is I think they had showed you that and you guys are like it’s bigger than a junkyard yeah we definitely got lucky with with our earners I mean they started when we started off torching 8 hours a day that was very rough but once they kind of our owners whatever we put into them they’ll put into US you said that yesterday and I like I really like that yeah especially like like it’s really

the truth like Dan um whatever he’ll put so much he’ll put 10 times more into you if you just give half of what he gives to you back into him so um no we’re very lucky we’re very lucky for that it’s crazy probably like Co didn’t happen and we didn’t like we graduated both 2020 uhuh if Co didn’t happen we’ probably won yeah I would be in college right now how’ you guys meet dad like how’d that come about such a funny you want to do my older cousin Mike is um Dan’s cousin so they’re both third generation yeah we went to school with Dan’s daughter yeah so we I never met Dan in high school you you did right yeah I met Dan since I was younger but it’s weird we’re always in the same ween always as close now with them every day so so you your family then yeah yep I always like grew up I was very close with Mike Mike side the second generation owner yeah um that’s Dan’s dad who was obviously second generation too they’re cousins um I would like sleep over there when I was younger

I always knew like he was getting up to go work in the junkyard uhhuh and I did work there when I was younger I didn’t have as much of a good time when I was younger picking up metal just picking up like little pie you’re young man you’re just trying to make enough money to to just to go out and have fun like you’re not necessarily like this is going to be my career someday you know I was just waiting for 12:00 to come go home and get in the pool Summers get some lunch you know eat something good at that at that when you’re that age you can eat about anything as much as you want and yeah so what I mean what’s the rest of the day look like for you guys what do you guys got what are you guys getting into well we have that big podcast and then we’re going to come we heard you’re having having your dad on the Pod also I am man I’m super stuck so we’re so we’re going to come watch that listen to that yeah other than that I don’t know

it’s the last day for us we fly out tomorrow nice take a party tonight and then relax a little bit take it easy so have you guys have you guys connected with anybody here that um did you did you did you you kind of wanted to or you what’s the what’s been the yeah we’ve met with a lot of like customers we already have and we set up some stuff with some new people we haven’t met too we went and seen a a shredder that was like a mini Shredder zat shredder like 10 minutes away from here visited a yard um just see it’s cool to see like how different operations are set up yeah and yeah I think it’s just really the people meeting all the different people has been good how about you anything I just I like catching up with people like last year in Nashville was more meeting a lot of people but this year it’s like a mix between meeting new people and catching up with old people I love being able to like reach out like when we’re back home in Colombia being able to talk to people

who are all over the United States doing the same stuff we do just catching up I love it it’s it’s amazing we’ve only been in it for June will be 3 years um for me so I’m excited to see what like you said 10 years looks like yeah oh yeah dud I mean you’ll look back 10 years will go quick yes but you’ll look back and you’ll be like man but just being steady and being consistent and like I said keep showing up it’s also just amazing what can get accomplished in 10 years and I think that’s what’s so cool for me like I’m kind of living vicariously through you guys and the fact that I get to like if I if I would have started like this you know when I was 22 when I graduated like it would be awesome to go back and look at like those days like when we were just you know two yards you know just trying to do anything we could to grow the business and I wish I could go back and look at those days like and have it on like on video you

know cuz it I think cuz we were we did a lot of crazy stuff that we tried a lot of crazy stuff just trying to do anything that we could and I’m envious that you guys are going to have that opportunity able to look back if you guys just keep going and keep basically documenting your the story and it’s I mean it’s it’s it’s think about how far like think about your first dumpster Talk podcast and then like what it looks like today right like how much more comfortable you are like talking biggest that’s probably the biggest change just being able to like when we first started we would’t be able to come and do this here my face will get red my hands still get a little sweaty but get a little nervous get up on the big stage oh my Lord I’m not shaking anyone’s hands till after yeah you’ll be just sitting there like trying to dry him out yeah I you know what I I still even today like I’ll still get kind of nervous like and but I think it’s just you get a little bit you you understand

I always say once you’ve ran a mile it makes it easier to run a mile because you know that you’re going to be tired you’re going to breathe a little bit but you know that feeling yeah so you’re like yeah I know yeah I know yeah I know what that feels like so I’m good you know but it’s that first getting over that initial hurdle and going through that process that actually makes it you know that much you know more comfortable but it’s a great opportunity though oh it’s it’s amazing that’s why I’m like I’m super stok for you you know I’m I’m I’m I’m I’m excited like I said I’m going to keep watching man enjoy the rest of the show but please please please if you if you do it for anybody do it for me just keep document the growth man cuz I it’s going to be awesome to look back when you guys have more yards you got more equipment you got more guys you got more scrap and be like that’s where we started we appreciate that that’s awesome thank you for having us I’m going to do what

I can man I’m trying to keep up with you guys we have to get get you in the dumpster dude I’m I’m going to have Nick and I have been hatching on a plan trying to get out there so sounds good please believe it’s going to happen let’s set it up thank you all right guys thanks for coming out yes sir
