**Welcome to Built to Work**

The podcast that gets its hands dirty, dives into the grit, and uncovers the heart of what makes the blue-collar world tick. I’m Colin, your host, and I’m sitting down with the people who keep our world running. From those tackling the tough jobs no one else dares to do, to the HR professionals working overtime to find the labor force we desperately need. Whether you’re in the trenches or behind the scenes, this podcast is for anyone who values hard work, determination, and stories that build the backbone of our workforce. So, grab your gloves, your coffee, or your clipboard. It’s time to get to work.

**Episode Introduction**

Colin: Welcome to another Built to Work podcast. I am here today with Brett Echart, the man, the myth, the legend. Brett, thanks for being here with me today, dude.

Brett Echart: I was about to say you’re the man, the myth, the legend. I’ve been enjoying the podcast, man. Actually sitting down with people that actually do the thing— they’re out there doing the work. My ass sits at a desk more than I used to. So yeah, thank you for doing what you guys do.

Colin: No, absolutely. We both know we’ve become keyboard warriors, desk jockeys, and a lot of the guys are out there doing the real work, sweating, getting it dirty. We’re just glad to have them on our team.

Brett: Yeah, it takes a team, man. Just like football, you got to have the players, the trainers, the coaches, and the GM. It takes all that to make a football team. It’s no different than in business, where you need your team to execute.

**Discussing the Importance of Team and Growth**

Colin: It’s amazing looking at how essential your team is, from corporate to operational levels, to really execute the work. Accounting, HR, payroll—there’s a lot of people behind the scenes. From cutting scrap to driving trucks, everyone plays a part.

Brett: One thing I’m trying to impress upon people at the Scrap Expo is there are so many quality third-party companies you can use. It’s really the growth hack people are looking for, especially in challenging markets. You don’t need to be fully committed to a piece of equipment or a full-time accountant all year long. Find that fractional help and allow yourself that growth.

**Taking Strategic Steps in Business**

Brett: Business is like going from Single A to the majors. You’ve got to take those steps and find those hacks. Encourage people to grow—bet on themselves. There are options to help someone test a role or position before fully committing.

Colin: Absolutely. It’s important to challenge and encourage people. There’s a lot of space between point A and Z, and many people just need someone to give them the nudge to move forward.

**Building a Business and Leadership**

Colin: Tell me more about your passion for encouraging people to grow and get better.

Brett: I started in a small family business. I knew I’d always do something within the scrap business, but other opportunities intrigued me. My passion stems from knowing the value of encouragement, having been pushed by great coaches and mentors. Motivation comes and goes, but having someone continually driving you is invaluable.

Colin: I agree. From our college days to business, some memories are tough but rewarding. It’s about creating more of those rewarding team experiences now in my work life.

**Encouraging Growth and Innovation**

Colin: Let’s pivot a bit. How do you encourage people to take more risks and bet on themselves?

Brett: It’s about building confidence in people. You don’t need to know everything to start a venture. Focus on problem-solving, and partner with those who complement your strengths. Your job as a leader is to clear people’s obstacles, helping them do their jobs better.

Colin: And making sure everyone has the resources to succeed, which ties back to servant leadership—putting others ahead of yourself, ensuring they can thrive so ultimately everyone benefits.

**Wrap Up**

Colin: I want to be respectful of your time. Any last thoughts to motivate us as we go out to conquer the world?

Brett: America needs more builders, more doers. The opportunity is out there; you just have to take advantage of it. Don’t wait for things to come to you. Be proactive.

Colin: That’s inspiring, Brett. Thanks again for joining. We should symbolize this with an American flag and some bald eagle screeches!

Brett: When you’re back in Idaho, check out our podcast room—it’s got an American flag, a bald eagle, and more. You’ll appreciate it.

Colin: I look forward to it. Appreciate your time today.

Brett: Likewise, appreciate you, sir.
