Talkin’ Tires: Episode 18 | Rick Goodwin and AC Caswell | Driven Hearts Charity

In this episode of Talking Tires, host Craig Hunter interviews Rick Goodwin and former NFL player AC Caswell from Driven Hearts Charity at the 10th annual Tire Recycling Conference. They discuss their mission to empower underprivileged communities by building soccer fields and playgrounds using recycled rubber in locations ranging from the Darien jungle in Panama to Fort Myers, Florida. Beyond sports facilities, the organization offers a "hand up" through free daycare and educational scholarships for low-income families to help rebuild the family unit. AC Caswell shares his personal story of growing up in poverty and explains how providing safe, quality places to play can eliminate "dream deficit" and build lasting confidence in children. **Craig Hunter:** All right, welcome to another episode of Talking Tires. I’m your host, Craig Hunter, president of Tire Reclaim. I’m here with Rick Goodwin of Driven Hearts, and we’re going to learn a little bit more about what they’re doing here at the Tire Recycling Conference. We’re recording this podcast live at the 10th annual Tire Recycling Conference for the TRF, Tire Recycling Foundation.

**Tire Recycling and Community Impact**

**Craig Hunter:** Rick, thank you for joining us. Can you tell us about Driven Hearts and your role in the tire recycling community?

**Rick Goodwin:** Thanks for having us. Talking tires is about everything from the manufacturing of tires to the disposal and end of life tires, which is where tire reclaim comes in. We engage in crumb rubber, press molding, and other innovative uses for tires. Rural areas are filled with giant piles that we’re trying to clean up. We’re partnering with people all over the industry, targeting impoverished areas to make a difference.

**Craig Hunter:** You have an impressive background, Rick. Please share a bit about your journey and how you’ve arrived here.

**Rick Goodwin:** I started in the toy industry in 1994, changing how children learn electronically with the first patent. Transitioning into automotive, I assisted in creating advertising solutions for repair shops. My primary background is in software, and we developed a program that allows customers to get service quotes online. Now, with AI enhancements, we’re able to diagnose vehicle issues with high accuracy.

**Creating Opportunities for Underprivileged Communities**

**Rick Goodwin:** This journey led me to become a charter boat captain. While in Panama, I encountered a village of children with little hope, yet they loved soccer. My connections in the tire industry inspired me to help by donating a recycled soccer field to the jungle. This project is our first step, supported by industry leaders like US Auto Force and Liberty Tire Recycling.

**Craig Hunter:** That’s inspiring. Can you elaborate on the significance of creating safe recreational spaces for children in underserved areas?

**Rick Goodwin:** These spaces provide opportunities for children who live in darkness to step into the light. They offer a dream, a path to education through sports, and help uplift not just the children but their families by breaking cycles of debt and poverty.

**Craig Hunter:** Driven Hearts is truly making a difference. What’s your vision for the future?

**Rick Goodwin:** We aim to establish chapters nationwide, spreading our mission to help lift families out of poverty, provide free daycare, and create educational opportunities. It’s a hand up, not a hand-out, involving local communities, governments, and businesses to inspire long-term change.

**Introduction to AC Caswell**

**Craig Hunter:** That’s fantastic, Rick. Transitioning now, we’re excited to have AC Caswell from the Driven Hearts program here. AC, welcome to the podcast.

**AC Caswell:** Thank you, Craig. It’s a privilege to be here and share the impact we’re creating through Driven Hearts. It’s about giving back, especially as someone who grew up in similar challenging environments.

**Craig Hunter:** You and Rick seem to share a vision of empowering youths through sports facilities. How did your background influence your involvement?

**AC Caswell:** Growing up in South Central Los Angeles without my father and facing hardships, my journey was shaped by nonprofits that nurtured me. Having organizations like Driven Hearts when I was younger would have made a significant impact, providing safe places to thrive and build confidence.

**Craig Hunter:** What message do you have for communities and individuals who can support this initiative?

**AC Caswell:** Let’s join together to be that positive change. It’s about collaboration, whether through resources, awareness, or action, we can break cycles of poverty and empower future generations through platforms like Driven Hearts.

**Craig Hunter:** We appreciate your inspiring words, AC. Thank you for contributing to this meaningful cause, and best of luck with Driven Hearts.

**Conclusion**

**Craig Hunter:** Thanks again to Rick Goodwin and AC Caswell for sharing their vision and passion with us. We look forward to seeing how Driven Hearts will continue to evolve and impact communities. Stay tuned for more episodes of Talking Tires.

**Craig Hunter:** Thank you everyone for listening.
